Uncanny X-Men #1 Review

Bendis throws readers a huge swerve from the get go. He wants you to believe you are seeing something you’re not. He is highly successful in doing just that. I love and hate him for it. This story is a continuation of what he’s been doing in All-New X-Men but it’s something that you can pick up and be where you need to be without getting the other book. (You should get the other book though. All-New X-Men has been fantastic!)

S.H.I.E.L.D. has intel that Scott Summers (Cyclops) is on a dangerous mission and needs to be stopped. While S.H.I.E.L.D. knows this, they don’t know that the after effects of Avengers vs. X-Men or that the Phoenix has drastically changed some of the longstanding characters in the X-community. Our informant then recounts information that lets S.H.I.E.L.D. know just how crazy things might be.

A slight issue for me is that Magik has been depicted in a certain way since returning to the X-fold years ago. Bendis almost seems to take the edge away from her and make her more like her former self. I’m unsure if I like this or not yet. Other than that, Bendis is giving me something fun and new to read with characters that I thought might have become a bit boring.

Anybody that knows me knows that I am a HUGE fan of Chris Bachalo. His work here is simply fantastic. I love how he draws Cyclops costume. There is very little that I didn’t like about his work this issue. The small thing that I would have to nitpick about is the new mutant’s power. I couldn’t tell if the bubbles were something thick and solid that was causing destruction or if they were just bubbles. Other than that, I just sat back and salivated at the beauty of Bachalo’s art. The battle with the Sentinels and Cyclop’s eye blast looked great.

I feel like Bendis has almost put more effort into the X-Men than he did when he started off with the Avengers. It might be that he’s grown and has become better at writing team books. Whatever it was, he took forever to really get the Avengers going and it could sometimes be quite boring. His X-books are anything but, Uncanny included. They start off with a bang and capture the reader’s attention immediately.

Oh, this is a definite “DON’T LOOK AT THE LAST PAGE” issue. You don’t want to spoil the traitor revelation before you read the rest of this book. Add it to your list. You won’t be sorry.
