To quote Fred Willard from A Mighty Wind, “Wha’ Happened?” This first issue was an obvious setup issue, a get to know who’s on the team. What Johns gives us is a train wreck.

Here are a few of the things that irritated me. I am sick and tired of DC shoving the Steve Trevor/Wonder Woman breakup down our throats. They remind us of it every chance they get. Another thing that just did not work was the introduction of Hawkman. Is he mentally ill? Is he really what he says he is? For those of us that have not read Savage Hawkman, Johns takes for granted that the readers know what Hawkman’s deal is. A third issue for me was the “mystery” runner we keep seeing throughout the story. When the identity is revealed with the huge “shocker” ending the reader can’t help but groan. There is absolutely zero concern over the fate of this character due to his/her role in the DC universe outside of this book.

The one thing that did work was the introduction of Stargirl. For those of those who don’t know, Stargirl was created by Johns with his sister, who died in a plane crash, in mind. I have faith that her character here will closely resemble that of the Stargirl prior to the New 52. A reporter in the issue tells us that she is the opposite of Lindsey Lohan. I am hoping that Johns doesn’t decide to do an about face and have her start to be more like Lohan. I hope his sense of honor towards his sister will prevent this from happening.

David Finch’s art makes this book even harder to read. The characters are so stiff and there is no flow or rhythm from panel to panel, even when there is action going on. Finch takes more time to draw overly developed, veiny forearms than he does faces. Every character basically looks the same but with different hair or apparel.

This book might be quite enjoyable for others, but there will be those that agree with me. This issue was dull and didn’t really leave me wanting to read the next issue. Right now I’m finding that Johns is missing the mark more than hitting it for DC since the New 52 started.
