Uncanny Avengers #4 Review

Wolverine is everywhere. He’s in every book. Some people like this, some don’t. Creators have taken him and put him on teams just to drive up sales. It doesn’t matter if he fits on the team or not. To have a cold blooded killer (far from reformed) on the Avengers has never made sense to me. Wolverine is currently on the roster for Uncanny Avengers, but this issue doesn’t rely on his character.

Remender has instead decided to focus on just how Havok, Rogue, and Scarlet Witch. This was the first issue in which I could honestly see why Captain America chose these characters to be on the roster. Cap and Thor were almost nonfactors as we get to see the mutants in action. They work well together, with the humans and as a whole unit.

This version of Red Skull is terrifying. He might be comparable to Snyder’s Joker in that this is a totally different take on the Red Skull and he’s been elevated to something you’ve never seen before. His lackeys are not ones you’re previously familiar with but that doesn’t detract from the danger they present. Remender has taken his time in developing a group of villains that actually give the Avengers pause. They aren’t a mass group of fodder like AIM or Hydra might have. They aren’t the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. They have a much scarier, more realistic threat.

There is something about this issue that was a huge sigh of relief for me. The past three issues have not had the most breathtaking, dynamic art that I’ve come to know and expect from John Cassaday. This issue features that art. His take on the classic X-Men #141 cover was beautiful. The action and detail (literally down to the last whisker) is an absolute treat.

This issue features a last page shocker. It will have some excited. It will have some up in arms. The one thing I know, it will be a very good story.

For those that were disappointed with the lackluster start to this series, check out this issue. It ends strong and looks promising from here on out.
