The Walking Dead #107 Review

While I’ve loved the current storyline of The Walking Dead, I’ve been getting some déjà vu. Negan has felt a little too much like The Governor in how he ruled his people with an iron fist and made those he came across submit to him. This issue pleasantly departs from that. I feel like in this issue we fully get our first good idea of just who Negan might be.

To briefly catch people up, Negan has essentially taken control of Rick’s community and that’s left a bad taste in many peoples’ mouths, including Carl. Carl took it upon himself to attack Negan. This attack failed and we were left with a cliffhanger ending waiting to see what Negan would do to Carl. Meanwhile, Rick has deduced Carl must’ve somehow left with Negan’s crew and is on his way to find Carl. Rick and his group happen upon Negan, who is bringing Carl back to the community. I’m trying to give you an idea of what’s happened so that I can briefly review this issue without revealing too much.

Rick finally acts how we’ve grown used to seeing Rick react. It was a long time coming. Negan acts how I never would’ve guessed him to act. Negan has seemed very vicious and dangerous in the past. This issue gave us a very different side to his character that I think just made him all the more dangerous. I think Rick felt that way too.

This issue reads much like the others, fast paced with tons of excitement and suspense and leaves us with a great cliffhanger. The events of this issue and the ending could have some very unforeseen and story altering changes. I can think of at least three different angles I can see Kirkman taking this book from this point. The best thing this book has going for it now is that Kirkman is becoming bolder than ever before and choosing to take this book in directions that might not be the most obvious to the readers. The worst thing this book has going for it is that you finish reading it and have to wait another four weeks to get the next issue. I cannot sing high enough praises for a book that delivers on every level, every time.
