ONE FOR SORROW

JAMIE McKELVIE IS BACK WITH HIS FIRST SOLO CREATOR-OWNED PROJECT IN OVER A DECADE!

London, 1900. The capital hums with the energy of the new era, but something darker lurks beneath the surface. A monstrous figure stalks the city’s criminal underworld at night, leaving a trail of bloody corpses in its wake. Rumors about the mysterious killer spread like wildfire. It’s a demon. A phantom. An angel of vengeance. Nothing can kill it. Nothing can stop it. And once it picks a new target, well, he better have a coffin picked out, because he’s already dead. The only clue that a baffled police force has to work with is the black and white feather left on each corpse, leading the press to dub the killer The Magpie. Is the Magpie killing at random, or is there a pattern that no one else can see? Three individuals, strangers to each other, might together have the answer. Madame Hendrikov, the Russian medium with an upper-class clientele desperate for the secrets of the dead. Bess Turner, the East End barmaid caught up in the schemes of an organized crime gang. And Ignatious Thorn, the world’s most famous consulting detective, brought to ruin by horrific tragedy.

The artistic mastermind behind THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, CAPTAIN CARTER, and CATWOMAN: ONE BAD DAY is back with a new comic unlike anything he’s created before. ONE FOR SORROW is an intensely stylish, supernatural suspense thriller, full of kinetic action, bloody revenge, and ghostly mystery.

Randy’s Reviews – Rapid Reactions for March 20th, 2013

I’m going to quickly touch on three books that worked for me this week and three that fell flat.

WINNER

Wonder Woman #18

This issue wraps up the events of a pretty epic storyline that has been going on since the first issue. The addition of Orion to Wonder Woman’s squad is great. He fits in perfectly. The potential for betrayal by certain characters this issue leave you on the edge of your seat. Great moment between Wonder Woman and Orion.

LOSER

Mystery Society Special 2013

The fact that Fiona Staples isn’t drawing this issue is a huge hit to it. The second hit is that this story is taking place so long after the original series (2010). Things happening here relate directly to that series and people are going to be lost. The whole issue seems like it’s a rushed idea that was originally a throw away.

WINNER

Avengers #8

This issue continues to explore the New Universe. Hickman is juggling many concepts and plots here. The reaction of the Avengers to something so powerful and untamed is believable. The reintroduction of a familiar (villainous?) face at the end makes things even more interesting.

LOSER

Justice League of America #2

While many are enjoying this book I am on the other end of the spectrum. The characters are awkward, the story is all over the place, and the art is horrendous. How is it in any way practical that Catwoman would walk around with her suit unzipped down to her belly button? She doesn’t even wear it like that in her own book. This book was a total train wreck.

WINNER

Daredevil #24

Rarely do I like my comics to focus so closely on real life issues, well so blatantly that is. The topic of cancer is handled in such a natural way and I love to see Matt Murdock take it so seriously instead of not being there for his friend. The big mystery surrounding who has been targeting Daredevil since early on in this series continues on, possibly drawing to a head. I’m curious who is in that big sarcophagus.

LOSER

Cable & X-Force #6

Characters act way out of the norm here. I don’t mind when the writer is vague and only reveals things when they are needed to know. The problem here is that the writing is so vague that the artist doesn’t even seem to know what’s going on. Cable and Dr. Nemesis are in a fight and talking about things that we never even see. Sadly, Dennis Hopeless is writing a much weaker book here than over on Avengers Arena.
