Think a combination of Frankenstein and Vikings. That is what you get with this book.

Rikard, his father, and a small crew of Vikings are trying to protect their village from a witch and her Night Creatures. For some reason, they are attacking their village with a vengeance and it’s all Rikard and company can do to keep them from destroying the whole village. Just when they believe they’ve killed the attackers and can let their guard down, they are in for a surprise. This surprise results in a bit of a shocker. Something happens that one might not expect to happen. When you finally feel you’ve wrapped your head around this event, you get a shocking ending that will once again have your head whirling.

The most characterization you’ll find in this issue is that of Rikard’s father and Bera, Rikard’s love interest. Rikard’s father, Kirk, is not a fan of Bera. While some thinks it’s because she’s the prettiest woman in the village (and they could be right), Kirk quickly reveals his real reason for disliking her. There is much more to Bera than anyone thought there was. These two characters will either have to kill each other or learn to work together as this series progresses.

I started reading The Sixth Gun from the first issue and was instantly hooked. Bunn’s story was something different and compelling. Cullen Bunn’s first issue of Helheim is also something different, but isn’t as compelling to me. It is a good, solid start and has me wanting to read more, but I hope to get much more insight to characters like Rikard and the witch before long.

Helheim has sold out. If you missed the first issue, make sure to look for a second print. Bunn’s writing on his smaller press comics is very different and one you’re sure to enjoy. Add this book to your pull list or you’ll risk missing out on more issues.
