Hickman is flexing his creative muscles in his Avengers books. One of Hickman’s strengths is the ability to tell multiple stories, incorporating wild technology and concepts that the normal person has a very difficult time wrapping their brain around (just look at Spencer try to do this in Secret Avengers and fail).

The New Avengers/Illuminati are in a time crunch. They only have a certain amount of time to try to figure out a way to keep two universes from colliding with each other, killing billions. There is no Infinity Gauntlet to help. They’ve had to betray a friend because finding a way to solve this problem might require them to make sacrifices that their friend was not willing to take.

The interaction between Reed and T’Challa is great. Hickman is able to make these two characters look highly intelligent while still being relatable.

Stark has his moment to show how he looks at the big picture, and what a dangerous picture it is. Stark’s comment about “being back in the arms game” is chilling.

The scene-stealer for this issue though is Dr. Strange. Strange has decided that he will be the one to make the desperate and hard decisions that the others might not want to. I imagine that if Hickman takes Strange down this road then we’ll see some scary consequences for this. It’s interesting that they might do something like this with Dr. Strange since he’s been through so much recently and just regained the title of Sorcerer Supreme.

The Avengers formulate a plan and look to execute it with some efficiency. There is one giant, world-devouring problem that stands in their way. Well, that and a certain Herald with a big axe.

If that doesn’t get you reading this book then I don’t know what will. This is a must read Marvel Now title!
