Comic book writer Greg Rucka and artist Michael Lark will be teaming up to bring us a new ongoing Image Comics series called “Lazarus” that will start in the early part of 2013.

The creative team has worked together before on the Eisner Award-winning DC Comics series Gotham Central which was part of the Batman family of comic books focusing on police procedural stories.

Their new comic book series Lazarus will focus on Endeavor Carlyle, who is a genetically engineered, extraordinary woman that is assigned to security detail for her family to help them maintain their seat of power.

The story for the new ongoing series draws part of its premise from the recent Occupy Movement that we’ve seen here in America in recent years and Endeavor Carlyle is actually security for one of the major families of the world that is quite literally part of the One Percent. In the future described in this comic series, wealth is no longer held by governments or corporations, but wealth is now in the hands of a limited number of powerful families that have access to much more than just cash, but also to material and resources.

Rucka goes on to describe the premise of the series as being about relationships and the constant question of who are you at your core. How much does nature versus nurture factor into who a person actually is?

Artist Michael Lark describes his biggest challenge as having to create an entire world in such a short period of time, saying that he really only had about six weeks to develop everything that we will see in the new series. While the series will be focusing primarily on Endeavor Carlyle’s family, each family will have their own unique style and unique look. Also, he’s had to think of things that you never really think about a lot, such as the way people dress in this new world, the weapons that are used…basically he’s having to start from scratch to design everything from the ground up. Even though there’s a lot of work to be done, Lark says he would love to work on this new series until he retires.

Lazarus will ship to comic shops in the Spring of 2013.
